Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 12-20
  • Thread tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Dubbing (body) Tan (also black/olive/slate) (small pinch)
  • CDC (underwing) Dun cdc feather (1 feather)
  • Deer or elk hair (wing) Natural deer hair (1 small clump)
  • Hackle (optional) Brown hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and dub a slim, lightly tapered body from the bend forward to the 70% mark.
  2. Tie in a CDC feather as a low underwing over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
  3. Clean and stack a small clump of deer or elk hair and tie it in as a down-wing tent over the body, tips to the bend and butts pointing forward.
  4. Trim the butts to a short bullet head over the eye.
  5. Optionally wrap 2 turns of a matching hackle at the front and clip the fibers flat underneath so the fly sits low in the film.
  6. Whip finish and cement the head.
