Classic Recipe

  • Hook Barbless jig nymph hook, Fulling Mill 5045 Jig Force (or similar competition jig), #12-16 (bead 3.8mm for #12, 3.2mm for #14-16)
  • Thread Camel / brown (with a fluorescent orange hot-spot option) 8/0 / 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Oversized slotted tungsten, gold or copper (3.8mm for #12, 3.2mm for #14-16) (1)
  • Tail Two speckled/barred Coq de Leon fibers, split into a V (or brown goose biots) (2 fibers)
  • Rib Fine copper or gold wire (1 length)
  • Body Golden-brown / amber Spanish-style dubbing (or pheasant-tail fibers), tapered (as needed)
  • Thorax Dark brown or peacock-black dubbing, picked out for legs (pinch)
  • Hot spot Fluorescent orange thread collar behind the bead (2-3 turns)
  • Wingcase (optional) Dark pheasant-tail fibers or Thin Skin over the thorax (small bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the oversized tungsten bead onto the jig hook to the eye and start the thread.
  2. Tie in two speckled Coq de Leon fibers at the bend and split them into a V for the stonefly tails.
  3. Tie in the fine copper wire for the rib.
  4. Dub a slim, tapered golden-brown/amber body over the rear two-thirds; counter-rib with the copper wire in 5-6 open, evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  5. Optionally tie in a pheasant-tail wingcase to pull over later.
  6. Dub a fuller, darker brown/black thorax behind the bead and pick it out at the sides for legs.
  7. If used, pull the wingcase over the thorax and tie off.
  8. Add 2-3 turns of fluorescent orange thread as a hot-spot collar right behind the bead; whip finish.
