Slide the Black Brass Bead to the front of the hook and wrap the thread most of the way around the bend.
Even the tips of four to six Pheasant Tail fibers and tie in a very short tail, about half the shank length, seating it about a third of the way down the bend. Bring the thread forward.
Tie a strand of light olive Life Flex (Span-Flex) in along the side of the hook, pulling it tight as you bind down the shank.
Tie in the Pearl Krystal Flash at the rear, run even thread wraps forward, and reposition the hook level in the vise.
Spiral the Krystal Flash forward in four or five open turns to just past the halfway point and capture it; the first turn is the awkward one.
Wrap the Life Flex forward over the thread-and-flash body; it is semi-translucent, so the flash shows through. Capture and trim.
Build a ball of Peacock Ice Dub for the thorax about the size of the bead or a little larger; wax or a lick on the fingers helps this coarse dubbing bind to the thread on a small fly.
Cut a small V-notch in a turkey slip with the tips glued so the V holds, and tie it in as a wing case slightly longer than the thorax, pointing back. Trim the butts and tame any frazzle with a couple of placed wraps; trim shag from the dubbing.
Cut a V-notch of Natural India Hen Back fibers and tie them in as legs just a hair longer than the wing case: place, pinch hard, one loose wrap, then tighten, so a few fibers stick out each side. Trim the excess. A stubborn side can be pushed into position with hackle pliers.
Bind five or six strands of Peacock Ice Dub tightly to the thread and take a couple of wraps to cover the tie-ins, then whip finish just in front of that dubbing, behind the bead. Trim any stragglers facing forward.
Cover the wing case with Loon UV Fly Finish, running it slightly up over the bead, spread it with a bodkin to cover the top of the fly, and cure with a UV light.
