Eyes Lead dumbbell
How to tie it
Start the Nano Silk and seat the lead dumbbell eyes about one and a half eye-lengths back from the hook eye with figure-8 wraps and a few over-and-under turns to tighten. Add a little Zap-A-Gap over the wraps and take the thread to the rear of the shank.
Pull a clump of Krinklezon about pencil thick from the bag, twist it lightly to shed the stragglers, and tie it in with roughly 5/8 of the length forward and 3/8 back. After a couple of turns, fold the front portion back, spread it over the top of the shank with your thumb, and build a small thread dam in front. The shank will take about four such sections.
Advance to the next section and tie in a second pencil-thick clump 50/50 by its middle. Fold the front half back, this time spreading it down over the sides to start the profile, and build a dam that forces the fibers rearward. This reverse tie is what keeps the profile from collapsing into a noodle when stripped.
At the third section tie in another 50/50 clump, but first part the rear half down the middle with closed scissors so it straddles the hook point. Fold back, build a firm dam, and brush the fly out to check the taper.
Right behind the eyes, fold a clump of Krinklezon in half, cut it, and reverse-tie it on top so it fans back; then do the same with a contrasting yellow-gold Ripple Ice underneath. Fold both back, keeping the yellow on its side and the Krinklezon on the other, and build a dam that blends into the eyes.
In front of the eyes, reverse-tie a small folded section of copper Ripple Ice, cut shorter than the yellow, fanning it out between the eyes rather than leaving it in a clump. Follow with a short Krinklezon section the same length as the yellow, laid between the eyes.
Finish the head with the smallest clump yet, red Ripple Ice cut very short so it reads as only a hint, reverse-tied between the dumbbell arms and secured with a couple of wraps in front. Pick out any red strays.
Clip all the fibers back with a hair clip, build a small dam, and double whip finish. Run thin UV resin over the head fibers between the eyes, leaving a slight hump rather than pulling them tight, cure, then comb the body out to separate the fibers.
