Midge Pupa Bead

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph/scud hook, 16-22
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Silver or copper bead Silver bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Thread body Black thread (for body)
  • Ultra wire Silver or copper wire (1 for rib)
  • Peacock herl or dubbing Peacock/black flex floss (1 strand for thorax (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead to the eye and mount the hook. Start thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in a length of fine wire at the bead, then run a smooth, slim thread body down to the bend and back to the bead, keeping it thin.
  3. Wrap the wire forward in 5-7 evenly spaced open turns to form a bright, segmented rib; tie off behind the bead.
  4. Optionally take one turn of peacock herl or a touch of dubbing right behind the bead for a small thorax.
  5. Sweep any thorax fibers back and take a couple of thread wraps to settle them.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement over the thread.
