Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 18-24
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Thread or fine dubbing body Black or grey dubbing (for body)
  • Grizzly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Hi-vis poly yarn White or orange hi vis poly yarn (small tuft for wing/post)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread behind the eye and build a slim, smooth thread or dubbing body back to the bend and forward again to the 70% mark.
  2. Tie in a short upright tuft of hi-vis poly yarn at the 70% mark to serve as a visibility post you can track on the water.
  3. Tie in a grizzly hackle by the stem in front of the post.
  4. Take 3-4 turns of hackle around the base of the post and just behind the eye to float the fly, then tie off.
  5. Trim any stray hackle fibers underneath for a flush float, and trim the hi-vis tuft to a short, visible nub.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a tiny drop of cement.
