Reference Recipe

  • Hook Short curved nymph hook (e.g. TMC 2488), 16-18
  • Thread Camel 8/0

Materials

  • Gold plummeting tungsten bead Gold bead (1, 2.0mm (5/64"))
  • Coq de Leon fibers Medium pardo (small bunch for tail)
  • Ultra wire Copper wire (1 length, small, for rib)
  • Fox squirrel dubbing Natural hare s ear dubbing (small pinch for thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold tungsten bead to the eye and mount the hook. Start thread behind the bead and run to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of Coq de Leon fibers for a tail roughly one shank long, splayed slightly.
  3. Bind in the copper wire at the rear, then build a smooth, thin thread abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds.
  4. Rib the copper wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the body and add durability; tie off and helicopter the tag to break it.
  5. Dub a small, buggy fox-squirrel thorax right behind the bead, keeping it sparse.
  6. Sweep out a few guard hairs for legs, whip finish behind the bead, and add a drop of head cement.
