Reference Recipe

  • Hook Short curved nymph hook (e.g. TMC 2488), 16-20
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Gold tungsten bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Tan/ginger pheasant tail fibers (3-4 for tail and legs)
  • Stripped peacock quill or tan quill Tan stripped peacock quill or quill (1 for abdomen)
  • Pearl Flashabou Pearl flashabou (1 strand for flashback)
  • Mottled turkey tail Natural mottled turkey (2 thin slips for wingcase)
  • Tan/PMD dubbing Tan dubbing (small pinch for thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Tungsten bead on, hook mounted, thread started behind the bead and run to the bend.
  2. Tie in 3-4 ginger pheasant fibers for a tail three-quarters of a shank long.
  3. Wrap a tan quill forward to the 60% mark for a segmented abdomen and bind off.
  4. Tie in a pearl Flashabou strand and two thin turkey slips over the abdomen for the wingcase.
  5. Dub a tan thorax to the bead and fold three fibers along each side as legs.
  6. Pull the wingcase then the flashback forward over the thorax, bind at the bead, whip finish, and coat the wingcase with UV resin.
