Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger/scud hook, 16-20
  • Thread Camel or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Zelon or Antron Amber zelon or antron (few fibers for trailing shuck)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4 for abdomen)
  • Fine wire Copper wire (1 for rib)
  • CDC feather Dun cdc feather (1 for emergent wing)
  • Peacock or fine dubbing Peacock/brown or fine dubbing (small pinch for thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend of the curved shank.
  2. Tie in a sparse amber Zelon trailing shuck, half a shank long, to imitate the husk the emerger is climbing out of.
  3. Bind in a fine copper wire, then wrap 3-4 pheasant tail fibers forward to the 60% mark for the abdomen and counter-rib with the wire in 4-5 turns.
  4. Tie in a short CDC feather by the tip at the thorax and stand it up as a low emergent wing, no longer than the abdomen.
  5. Dub a small peacock thorax fore and aft of the wing to prop it upright.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye; no cement on the CDC so it stays buoyant in the film.
