Micro Crab

Crab · Permit · Bonefish · Redfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater hook, 4-8
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Bead-chain eyes Silver bead chain eyes medium (1 pair)
  • EP fibers or wool Tan/olive craft fur ep fibre (small clump for body)
  • Rubber legs Tan barred rubber legs medium (2-3 pairs)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands for claws)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash bead-chain eyes on top of the shank behind the eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in a short pair of claws from folded Krystal Flash or splayed fibers, kept sparse and stubby.
  3. Tie in 2-3 pairs of rubber legs along the shank, splayed to the sides to suggest crab legs.
  4. Build a small, flat, round body of tan EP fibers or spun wool, then trim it top and bottom into a low carapace disc.
  5. Whip finish at the eyes and add a drop of cement.
  6. Trim the body to a neat coin shape, keeping it compact so it sinks quickly and sits claws-down.
