  • Hook Standard wet-fly / soft-hackle hook, 14-18
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Hare's ear or brown dubbing Brown dubbing (small pinch for body)
  • Dubbing accent Hot orange ice dub (tiny pinch for thorax)
  • Partridge or grouse hackle Grey/brown partridge hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Dub a slim, slightly tapered brown body over the rear two-thirds of the shank, keeping it sparse.
  3. Add a tiny hot-orange dubbing collar just ahead of the brown body; this splash of orange is the pattern's signature trigger, so keep it small.
  4. Tie in a soft partridge or grouse feather by the tip in front of the orange, dull side toward you.
  5. Take 1-2 turns of the soft hackle, then sweep the fibers back and pin them with a few thread wraps so they cloak the body.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and add a drop of cement.
