Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook, Fulling Mill 5045 Jig Force barbless (or Umpqua XC400BL), #14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Slotted (drop) tungsten bead on the balance pin - 2.5mm (yellow-dot) or 3.0mm (red-dot) (1)
  • Balance pin Sequin/beading pin (1)
  • Tail/body Black marabou, wispy (1-2 pinches)
  • Flash (optional) Pearl or holographic Krystal Flash (2-3 strands)
  • Collar Black marabou or soft black dubbing (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the tungsten bead onto the balance pin and lash the pin along the top of the shank so the bead extends just past the hook eye; trim the excess pin. This balances the fly horizontal.
  2. Run thread to the bend and tie in a wispy black marabou tail about one shank length, plus a couple of strands of pearl Krystal Flash if desired.
  3. Wrap the remaining marabou (or a marabou dubbing loop) forward as a thin, wispy body to behind the bead.
  4. Add a soft black marabou or dubbing collar behind the bead, whip finish.
