Micro Balanced Bung Damsel

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook, Fulling Mill 5045 Jig Force barbless (or Umpqua XC400BL), #14
  • Thread Watery olive 8/0

Materials

  • Bead 3.0mm metallic pink slotted (drop) tungsten bead, seated on the balance pin (1)
  • Balance pin Sequin/beading pin (or straightened pin), extended past the hook eye (1)
  • Tail Olive marabou (Fulling Mill premium selected olive, or Fish Hunter Fl. Damsel Olive UV) (small pinch)
  • Body Olive Half-Round D-Rib, medium (or light-olive body glass) (1 length)
  • Thorax Psychedelic olive nymph dubbing (Fulling Mill Ultra Nymph Dub) (pinch)
  • Eyes (optional) Black paint-pen dots on the bead, coated with UV resin (-)

How to tie it

  1. Push the tungsten bead onto the balance pin, then lay the pin along the top of the shank so the bead sits out past the hook eye by about one eye-length; lash the pin down tight and cut off the excess. This counterweight makes the fly hang perfectly horizontal.
  2. Wrap thread to the bend and tie in a slim olive marabou tail about one shank length.
  3. Tie in the olive Half-Round D-Rib at the bend and wrap it forward in touching turns for a segmented body, stopping behind the bead; tie off.
  4. Dub a small thorax of psychedelic olive nymph dubbing between the body and the bead.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead. Optionally dot black eyes on the pink bead and coat with UV resin.
