Fischer's Flies

  • Hook Ahrex FW507 Dry Fly Mini, 22
  • Thread Black 30D

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (Upavon Hollow Dub)
  • Wing White uni stretch (Fulling Mill Ultra Dry Yarn)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (Fulling Mill Flexi-Floss Micro)
  • Resin (none)

How to tie it

  1. Start the 30D black nano silk at the 60% mark and run a single thin layer back to the bend. On a size 22 the thread base is a real proportion of the finished fly, so keep it to one pass.
  2. Dub a tight ball of black hollow dub over the rear third of the shank for the gaster, keeping it round rather than tapered. Hollow dubbing traps air, which is what floats an ant with no hackle on it.
  3. Take two or three bare thread wraps forward to leave a clear waist at the 50% mark, then tie in a short tuft of white ultra dry yarn upright at the 60% mark, trimmed to about a hook gap.
  4. Tie a strand of black micro flexi-floss across the shank just behind the yarn and figure-eight it so a leg sticks out each side, then trim them to roughly a hook gap long.
  5. Dub a second, smaller ball of hollow dub in front of the legs for the head and thorax, whip finish at the eye, and leave the fly untreated so the hollow dubbing keeps trapping air.
