  • Hook 1XL nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Gold tungsten bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Hare's mask dubbing Natural brown hare s mask dubbing (small pinch)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4 for tail)
  • Mylar tinsel / Flashabou Pearl or gold mylar tinsel flashabou (1 strand rib and wingcase)
  • Oval tinsel Gold oval tinsel (1 length for rib)

How to tie it

  1. Bead on, hook mounted, thread started behind the bead and run back to the barb.
  2. Tie in a short tail of pheasant tail fibers, one shank length or slightly less. Bind in the oval tinsel rib at the same point.
  3. Dub a slim, tapered abdomen of hare's mask over the rear 60% of the shank, keeping it thin.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold tinsel rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off; the metallic rib is the whole point, so keep the turns crisp.
  5. Tie in a strand of pearl mylar as a flashback, then dub a fatter, scruffy hare's ear thorax up to the bead.
  6. Pull the mylar flashback over the thorax to the bead, bind it down, and pick out a few guard hairs for legs. Whip finish and cement.
