Classic Recipe

  • Hook 4XL-6XL streamer hook, Gamakatsu B10S or Daiichi 2220, #2-6
  • Thread Black (or match color) 140 denier flat waxed nylon

Materials

  • Eyes Large lead dumbbell eyes (heavy, to get down) (1 pair)
  • Tail Marabou plume, full and slightly longer than standard (black / olive / white) (1-2 plumes)
  • Flash Krystal Flash or Flashabou (matching) (few strands)
  • Body Chenille or Ice Dub (matching) palmered with an oversized schlappen/bugger hackle (as needed)
  • Legs Barred round rubber legs (matching) (2-3 per side)
  • Head Spun/stacked deer belly hair, trimmed to a flat sculpin slider wedge (1 patch)

How to tie it

  1. Tie the heavy lead dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the eye; superglue.
  2. At the bend tie in a full marabou tail slightly longer than one shank, with a few strands of matching flash.
  3. Tie in an oversized schlappen/bugger hackle and your body chenille or Ice Dub at the bend.
  4. Wrap the body forward to just behind the eyes, then palmer the oversized hackle forward through it and tie off for a soft water-pushing collar.
  5. Figure-8 in a set of barred rubber legs at the sides.
  6. Spin/stack deer belly hair between the legs and the hook eye, packing it tight; whip finish.
  7. Trim the deer hair to a broad, flat sculpin-style slider head (wide and flat top and bottom) that pushes water and planes side to side.
