Melon Quill

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 100SP-BL (standard dry), 12-18
  • Thread Deep Yellow 72 denier

Materials

  • Spade hackle fibers Dark dun hackle fibers (heavy clump (tail))
  • Hen 'winger' cape feathers Medium dun hen hackle tips (2 (upright divided wings))
  • Stripped/dyed rooster quills Cream + Pink stripped dyed rooster quills (1 each (body))
  • Rooster neck hackle Ginger hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start deep yellow thread at about 75% on a #16 hook and wrap to the bend, then tie in a heavy clump of dark dun spade hackle fibers a bit longer than a shank; wrap over the butts to about 70%.
  2. Bring the thread to the eye and back to 80%, then stroke the tail up so it splays (caned).
  3. Even up and oppose two rounded-tip dun hen feathers, measure a shank-length, tie them in upright as divided wings, and build a small thread dam to stand them up and spread them slightly.
  4. Tie in one cream and one (thinner) pink pre-soaked stripped rooster quill along the near side and wrap back to the bend.
  5. Wrap both quills forward together in butted turns so the natural taper builds a variegated, segmented body; tie off behind the wings and trim.
  6. Tie in a ginger dry hackle by the bare stem just in front of the wings.
  7. Make the first turn behind the wings, then two or three turns forward to the front of the body to splay the hackle fore and aft; tie off, whip finish, and cement.
