Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater/tarpon (Gamakatsu SC15), 1/0-3/0
  • Thread white or to match 140 denier

Materials

  • Craft fur Match pattern (body and tail)
  • Zonker strip Match pattern (1 (collar))
  • Bead chain or small lead eyes Silver bead chain eyes medium (1 pair)
  • Deer body hair Match pattern (spun head)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Hard mono Clear weed guard (weed guard loop)

How to tie it

  1. Lash bead-chain (or small lead) eyes on top of the shank well forward, about one eye-length back from the hook eye, so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend tie in a sparse craft-fur tail one-and-a-half shanks long with a few strands of flash; the fur sweeps up and away from the point.
  3. Wind a zonker strip 2-3 turns as a pulsing collar just ahead of the tail and tie off.
  4. Spin a clump of deer hair in front of the collar, pack it back, and repeat to fill the shank forward to the eyes.
  5. Tie in a loop of heavy mono under the hook point as a weed guard and lock it down.
  6. Whip finish, remove from the vise, and trim the deer hair into a rounded muddler head that pushes water.
