Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry/terrestrial hook, 6-10
  • Thread black or tan 6/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam, 2mm Black over tan (1 strip)
  • Dry-fly dubbing Tan/olive scud dubbing (body)
  • Deer or elk hair Natural deer hair (underwing)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Round rubber legs Barred rubber legs (2 pairs)
  • Foam indicator patch Orange or pink foam indicator patch (1 small square)

How to tie it

  1. Bind a two-tone foam strip (tan under, black over) along the shank, segmenting with 2-3 thread wraps to the bend and leaving a short tag over the bend.
  2. Dub a thin body forward over the rear half to the 50% mark, half the dubbing you think.
  3. Fold the foam forward over the body and bind at 50%, then again at 70% to form two body segments; leave the front for the head.
  4. Tie a sparse elk-hair underwing over the body, tips to the rear one shank long, with a couple strands of pearl flash.
  5. Figure-8 a pair of rubber legs on each side at the two tie-down points, angled back.
  6. Fold the remaining foam forward as a head/wing pad, bind behind the eye, top it with a bright foam square for visibility, then whip finish under the head and cement.
