How to tie it
Slide a black tungsten cone head onto an Allen S402BL and add a short length of 0.020 lead wire, then push the wraps forward against the cone.
Start black 6/0 thread at the base of the lead, wrap through the lead a little to lock it in, then run the thread back to the bend.
Tie in hot orange Ultra Wire at the bend with a few wraps.
Snip a piece of fluorescent orange Ice Chenille and pull the fibres off one end so only the core remains, then tie the core in at the bend so it takes up no space. Let the materials hang down on your side of the hook, which is the way they will be wrapped.
Cut a cross-cut rabbit strip so the fur will protrude past the bend at the rear and reach the eye at the front. Check the hide side first: the very last section of a cut strip often carries short fibres, so trim that piece off before you measure.
Tie the rear of the strip in at the bend. Wet your fingers and pull the fur forwards, against its natural lay, so you can get thread onto the hide cleanly, then lock it down and stroke the fur back.
Wrap the thread forward to about the 80% mark.
Wind the Ice Chenille forward, working it underneath the rabbit as far as you can and stroking the fur up out of the way as you go. You want as much orange showing as possible. Tie off short of the cone: there is a lot still to come in at the front.
Bring the rabbit strip forward, cut it so it sits just behind the cone without bowing, and lock it down. Trim the fur out of the tie-in. Hide and fur build bulk very fast at the head.
Counter the strip with the wire rib, picking the wire through the fur every few fibres as you wrap so you are not matting it down. It will not be perfect and does not need to be.
Turn the fly over and tie in a small pinch of grizzly marabou in orange and black as a throat, for a little extra action and a softer look underneath.
Tie in a few fibres of white Flashabou along each side where the lateral line of a baitfish would sit. Keep it sparse. This is for effect.
Build the head with the 6/0, bringing it level with the cone and hiding all the butts, then whip finish and add head cement.
Trim the lateral-line fibres so they extend just past the tips of the rabbit fur.
