Medallion Midge

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved midge, 20-24
  • Thread Gray or olive 10/0

Materials

  • Body Thread (slim)
  • Wing Medallion sheeting, clipped (flat stub)
  • Thorax Fine dubbing (wisp)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved midge hook and lay a thread base from behind the eye down around the bend.
  2. Wrap a slim, smooth thread body back up to the thorax, keeping it thread-thin. This is a midge, not a nymph.
  3. Tie in a small strip of Medallion sheeting on top at the thorax, tip pointing forward over the eye.
  4. Dub the sparest wisp of fine dubbing for a thorax, just enough to bump the profile.
  5. Fold the Medallion wing back flat over the thorax and bind it down. It should lie low and flat, mimicking a spent or emerging wing seen from below.
  6. Snip the wing to a short flat stub just past the thorax.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and add a tiny drop of cement.
