Reference Recipe

  • Hook short-shank streamer or 60-degree jig, 1/0-4
  • Thread match color (rust/olive/black) size A (140 denier)

Materials

  • Rabbit zonker strip Match pattern (1 (tail))
  • Flash Pearl/gold flashabou (few strands top and bottom)
  • Marabou Match pattern (2 plumes (back and belly))
  • Palmer/Estaz chenille Match pattern (body)
  • Chenille Red chenille (1 turn (gill), optional)
  • Lead dumbbell eyes Painted dumbbell eyes medium (1 pair)
  • 3D epoxy eyes As desired uv resin (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Bind lead dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the hook eye with figure-8 wraps (rides point-up); lock with cement.
  2. At the bend tie in a rabbit zonker strip tail about 1.5 shanks long, with a few strands of flash top and bottom.
  3. Tie a plume of marabou on top and a matching plume on the belly to bracket the tail.
  4. Tie in Estaz/palmer chenille and wrap it forward in touching turns to just behind the eyes; optionally add one red chenille turn as a gill.
  5. Figure-8 more chenille around the dumbbell to form the head and tie off.
  6. Whip finish, cement, and glue a 3D eye to each side of the head.
