McPhail Buzzer Red Neck

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved grub/scud (Kamasan B100), 12-16
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Tying thread / stripped quill Black body quill or floss (body)
  • Fine wire Silver wire (rib)
  • Holographic tinsel Red holographic tinsel (thorax collar)
  • Antron White/cream antron (2 short breathers)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Run thread down to a point opposite the barb and catch in a strand of fine silver wire.
  2. Build a slim, smooth black body forward to the 75% mark, keeping the taper thin.
  3. Counter-rib the body with 5-6 open, evenly spaced turns of silver wire; tie off and helicopter away the excess.
  4. At the 75% mark tie a short, stubby tuft of white Antron on each side of the head for the breathers.
  5. Wind a pronounced collar of red holographic tinsel in front of the breathers to build a slightly bulbous thorax, the red neck.
  6. Whip finish, then coat the whole body and thorax with a thin layer of UV resin and cure for a wet, glassy shell.
