How to tie it
Start olive UTC 70 on a size 10 curved nymph hook and lash bead chain eyes on the underside, a little way back from the eye. Slung underneath, the fly rides inverted, which keeps the point clear of weed. There is no wing case here so upside-down costs you nothing.
MC Hammer stands for mottled chenille. Peel some fuzz off the end of a variegated olive-and-black chenille to make the tie-in easier and bind it in at the bend.
Wrap the chenille forward four or five turns, then two wraps back over itself. That fore-and-aft build is what gives the fly the bulbous, back-heavy abdomen a real dragonfly nymph carries.
Trim the body to profile if it needs it, though the chenille usually cooperates on its own.
Tie in olive mallard flank on each side so the legs reach back to about the end of the body. Mallard is webby and mobile, the legs of a dragon nymph are constantly working and this material sells that.
Dub a head of Arizona Simi Seal in peacock or olive, figure-eighting around the bead chain eyes. Buggy is fine here; do not fuss it.
Fish it down deep and hammer them. The pattern scales from a size 6 down to a 12 or 14.
