Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph/emerger hook, 20
  • Thread Gray 70 denier

Materials

  • Antron (tail/shuck) Gray antron (6-8 fibers)
  • Wire (body) Gold wire (1 length)
  • Razor foam, 0.5mm (shellback/wing case) Gray razor foam mm (thin strip)
  • Peacock herl (thorax) Natural peacock herl (1 strand)
  • Hen hackle fibers (legs) Natural partridge (5-6 per side)

How to tie it

  1. Secure a size 20 hook and dress the shank with thread.
  2. Tie in six to eight fibers of gray Antron for a sparse tail/shuck at the bend; trim.
  3. Tie in gold wire, bind it along the shank with touching turns to the thorax area, then wrap it forward to form a wire body; helicopter off.
  4. Cut a thin strip of 0.5mm gray razor foam about a hook-gap wide and tie it in at the thorax to be pulled over later.
  5. Tie in one peacock herl, add a touch of super glue, and wrap it to form the thorax, leaving a little space behind the eye; secure and break off.
  6. Tie in five or six hen hackle fibers along each side of the thorax for legs and adjust to length.
  7. Pull the foam shellback over the top of the thorax and secure it behind the eye with a couple of wraps.
  8. Whip finish with three turns, trim the foam just over the eye, and add head cement.
