Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/salmon iron (e.g. Dai-Riki 899), 2-8
  • Thread Red or black 70 denier / 8/0

Materials

  • Tail White and orange calf tail, mixed (small bunch)
  • Rib Oval gold tinsel (1)
  • Body Orange yarn rear half, black yarn front half (1 each)
  • Hackle Black hen or saddle (1)
  • Wing White and orange calf tail, mixed (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a mixed white-and-orange calf tail tail at the bend, about half a shank length long.
  2. Tie in the oval gold rib, then wrap orange yarn over the rear half of the shank and black yarn over the front half. The hot rear band glows behind the dark body on the swing.
  3. Spiral the gold rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns over both halves.
  4. Take 2-3 turns of black hackle as a collar and sweep the fibers back.
  5. Tie in a sparse mixed white-and-orange wing on top, reaching the tail tip.
  6. Build a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
