Reference Recipe

  • Hook Octopus hook (Gamakatsu), red or black, 6
  • Thread Black 70 denier (UTC)

Materials

  • Kreelex flash Silver/red blend (or ripple ice fiber)
  • Pine squirrel strip (body and collar)
  • Fish Mask (Flymen) (#4)
  • Living Eyes Earth (4mm)
  • Zap-A-Gap
  • UV resin

How to tie it

  1. Start black 70-denier thread on an octopus hook. Tie in a bundle of silver/red Kreelex flash on top of the shank, trim the excess, and secure; trim the flash tail short and at an angle for profile.
  2. Measure a pine squirrel strip so the hide ends at the end of the flash; tie it in on top, leaving room up front for the fish mask, and build a smooth base.
  3. Palmer a length of pine squirrel forward as a collar, stroking the hair back each wrap; tie off and trim, leaving room for the mask.
  4. Build a small thread base for the mask and whip finish; apply a healthy coat of Zap-A-Gap and slide the #4 Fish Mask onto the front, seating it in the glue.
  5. Once dry, take a few thread wraps in front of the mask for security and whip finish again.
  6. Glue 4mm earth Living Eyes into the mask's eye sockets, add glue to the front thread wraps, and finish with a small amount of UV resin, curing each side.
