Martini Caddis Emerger

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 2488 (or similar light-wire curved emerger/scud hook), #16-20 (the tyer's most-fished size is #18)
  • Thread Brown or olive dun 8/0

Materials

  • Dubbing (body) Olive or tan dubbing (A thin noodle)
  • Yarn (under wing) Tan antron (A few fibers, sparse)
  • Saddle hackle fibers (over wing) Brown saddle hackle (A small bunch)
  • Dubbing (head) Dark brown dubbing (A small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a TMC 2488 in size 18, start brown or olive dun 8/0 thread behind the eye and lay a base back around the curve to the start of the bend.
  2. Wax the thread and spin on a very thin noodle of olive (or tan) dubbing.
  3. Wrap the dubbed body forward around the curve and up the shank to about the 75% point, keeping it slim. This is a small pupa.
  4. Tie in a sparse pinch of tan yarn on top at the front of the body as an under wing, reaching back to about the hook point, and trim the butts.
  5. Tie a small bunch of brown saddle hackle fibers directly over the yarn as an over wing, the same length or slightly longer, and trim the butts.
  6. Spin a small pinch of dark brown dubbing on the thread and wrap two or three turns in front of the wing to form the head.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and add a tiny drop of head cement.
