Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Mustad R70 (standard nymph/wet hook), 10
  • Thread Yellow 30D nano silk

Materials

  • Foam, 6 mm (eyes) Pink foam mm (1 cylinder or strip)
  • Marabou (tail) White marabou (Half a plume, stripped down one side)
  • Straggle String (body) Yellow straggle string (1 length)
  • Marabou (wing) White marabou (1 good clump using both sides of the quill)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a Mustad R70 size 10 and start the yellow nano silk right behind the eye. Lay the 6 mm pink foam across the top of the shank, cinch it down, and figure eight over it to form the two booby eyes. Head cement or hard-as-nails over the figure eights is optional.
  2. Trim the foam roughly even on both sides. You will shape it properly at the end, and take the thread to the rear of the hook.
  3. Strip the marabou down one side of a plume for the tail. Start it at about mid-shank so it forms a bit of body as you wrap it back to the bend.
  4. At the tail, take one wrap behind the marabou and one in front again, that props the tail up, then pull the tail to length and break it off at about one hook length.
  5. Tie in the yellow Straggle String just behind the eyes, bind it back to the tail, then wrap it forward to the eyes in plenty of turns for a nice full body, stroking the fibers back as you go.
  6. Take a good clump of white marabou, using both sides of the quill so it is fluffy, and tie it in directly behind the eyes as the wing. Pull it back to length and break it off level with the tail.
  7. Rather than finishing behind the eyes, bring the thread forward and whip finish in front of the eyes. That stops the foam sliding back. Cut the thread.
  8. Trim the foam eyes to shape, snipping the edges off each side to round them into eyeballs.
