  • Hook 1XL wet-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread Brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Brown partridge fibers (tail) Brown hen hackle (4-6 fibers)
  • Hare's ear dubbing (body) Amber brown hare s ear dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Fine oval tinsel (rib) Gold oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Brown partridge (hackle) Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Hen pheasant or mottled turkey (wing) Mottled brown hen hackle (2 matched slips)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short tail of brown partridge fibers at the bend, about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in the gold oval rib, then dub a lean, slightly shaggy amber-brown hare's ear body forward to the 75% mark.
  3. Spiral the rib forward in 4-5 open turns for segmentation and tie off.
  4. Tie in a brown partridge feather by the tip and take one or two turns as a soft, swept-back throat hackle, then sweep the fibers under the shank.
  5. Cut two matched mottled slips from a hen pheasant or turkey wing, pair them dull sides together, and tie them in as a low downwing curving over the body to the bend.
  6. Whip finish a neat head and add a drop of cement.
