  • Thread Brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural brown pheasant tail fibers (3 fibers)
  • Hare's ear / brown dubbing (abdomen) Amber brown hare s ear dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Fine wire or gold tinsel (rib) Gold oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Mottled turkey (wingcase) Brown thin skin mottled (1 slip)
  • Brown partridge or hen (legs) Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Hare's ear dubbing (thorax) Dark brown dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in three pheasant tail fibers at the bend as a short tail, about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in the gold rib and dub a slim, slightly flattened amber-brown abdomen forward to the 60% mark. March Brown nymphs are flat clingers, so keep it lean.
  3. Rib the abdomen with 4-5 open turns of wire and tie off.
  4. Tie in a mottled turkey slip at the 60% mark pointing forward to fold back later as a wingcase.
  5. Dub a fatter dark thorax, then tie in a brown partridge feather and sweep a few fibers to each side as legs.
  6. Pull the turkey wingcase over the thorax, tie it down behind the eye, whip finish, and add a drop of cement.
