Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph / wet-fly hook, 12-14
  • Thread Brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Brown partridge fibers (tail) Brown hen hackle (4-6 fibers)
  • Hare's ear dubbing (abdomen) Amber / brown hare s ear dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Fine wire (rib) Gold wire (1 length)
  • Brown partridge (soft hackle) Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Hare's ear dubbing (thorax) Dark brown dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short tail of brown partridge fibers at the bend, about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in the gold wire rib, then dub a slim amber abdomen forward over two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 4-5 turns and tie off. It segments the body and armors the soft dubbing.
  4. Tie in a brown partridge feather by the tip and take one or two turns as a sparse soft-hackle collar so the fibers sweep back and pulse.
  5. Dub a rough, slightly bulging dark thorax in front of the hackle to suggest the emerging wing.
  6. Whip finish and add a drop of cement.
