Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL streamer hook, 4-6
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Lead or bead-chain eyes Black mono eyes small (1 pair)
  • Marabou (tail) Black or olive marabou (1 plume)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl/peacock herl (4-6 strands)
  • Hen or schlappen body feathers Black or olive saddle hackle (3-4 feathers)
  • Sili legs Barred olive/black rubber legs (1 pair)
  • Ice dubbing / dubbing brush Black or olive chenille ice dub (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in the weighted eyes a hook-eye's width back from the front with tight figure-8s so a bulky head can be built around them later.
  2. At the bend, tie in a marabou plume for the tail about one shank long, then a few strands of Krystal Flash the same length.
  3. Tie in 3-4 hen or schlappen feathers by the tips and palmer them forward one at a time, packing each tightly and stroking fibers back to build a fat, alive, wobbling body up to the eyes.
  4. Lash one sili leg to each side just behind the eyes so they kick out from the body.
  5. Spin a sparse dubbing noodle and figure-8 it around the eyes to form a bulky head that hides the wraps. Remember, half the dubbing you think.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of cement.
