How to tie it
Mount a size 8 3X-long curved shank hook and lay a black thread base back to where the barb was.
Stack a small clump of squirrel tail and tie it in as a short tail. You mostly just see the white tips. Check the position, then take a wrap under it so it does not droop.
Since the body is small chenille, do not trim the tail butts. Instead, pull out some thread and take loose open wraps forward over the butts to bulk up the underbody and add a little buoyancy. Then trim.
Strip a short length of core on the black chenille and tie it in right up front, binding it back along the whole shank so the body stays uniform. Bring the thread back to just short of the eye.
Wrap the chenille forward and tie it off just behind the eye. Trim.
Take the thread back about a third of the shank. Fold a strand of white round rubber, pull out a couple of inches of thread, and put on about three loose wraps to set the legs. Position them so two stand out each side, add several more loose wraps, then tighten. Going straight to tight wraps makes the legs flare in odd directions.
Take the thread forward. Clean the underfur out of a fair-sized clump of deer body hair and set it on top with the tips reaching back at least to the bend. Take one wrap around the hair only, then a wrap around hair and hook, keeping the bunch on top. Medium tension at first, then tighter as you work forward. Flaring up front is fine, flaring at the rear is not.
Before releasing the bunch, trim the forward butt ends so they are clearly shorter than the rear wing hairs. This is what lets you separate wing from head later.
Pull the butts up and take plenty of locking wraps through the flared hair, then whip finish right in front of the deer hair head.
Separate the long wing hairs from the shorter head hairs and trim the head to shape.
Trim the four rubber legs to length, the rear pair slightly longer than the body, the front pair a bit shorter than the rear. Finish with a drop of super glue on the underside thread wraps.
