  • Hook heavy black steelhead hook (e.g. TMC 7999), 2-6
  • Thread black 6/0

Materials

  • Calf tail (or hackle fibers) Hot orange hackle fibers (small clump for tail)
  • Oval tinsel Silver oval tinsel (medium, 1 length)
  • Antron/yarn Fluorescent orange poly yarn (rear body)
  • Antron/dubbing Black dubbing (front body)
  • Hen hackle Black hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf tail Orange deer hair (sparse clump)
  • Calf tail White calf body hair (sparse clump)
  • Krystal Flash Orange holographic tinsel (3-4 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye and wind to the bend. Tie in a small clump of hot-orange calf tail or hackle fibers for the tail, one shank length.
  2. Tie in medium oval silver tinsel for the rib at the bend.
  3. Wrap or dub a short section of fluorescent orange Antron over the back third of the shank for the rear body.
  4. Build slim black Antron or dubbing forward over the remaining two-thirds to the 80% mark for the front body.
  5. Spiral the silver tinsel forward in about 5 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  6. Tie in a black hen hackle and take 2-3 turns for a soft collar; sweep the fibers down and back.
  7. Stack a sparse clump of orange calf tail, then white calf tail on top, wing length reaching the bend; top with 3-4 strands of orange Krystal Flash.
  8. Build a neat black head, whip finish, and cement.
