Tyer Recipe
- Hook Curved scud/czech nymph hook (e.g. TMC 2457, Daiichi 1120), 14-18
- Thread Black 8/0
Materials
- Wire Fine silver or black (1 strand (rib))
- Thin Skin / scud back Clear or black wing slip (1 strip (shellback))
- Sowbug dubbing (muskrat / black Antron) Dark grey to black sowbug dubbing (body, picked out)
How to tie it
- Start the black thread behind the eye of a #16 scud hook and wrap to the bend.
- Tie in a length of fine wire and a strip of thin skin at the bend, leaving both hanging to the rear.
- Dub a fat, flattened body of dark grey/black sowbug dubbing forward to behind the eye.
- Pull the thin skin over the top to form a flat shellback and tie it down behind the eye.
- Spiral the wire forward over the shellback to segment the body and lock the back down; helicopter the wire to break it off.
- Pick out the dubbing along the sides and underneath to suggest legs, keeping the profile flat and wide.
- Whip finish and cement.
