Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/czech nymph hook (e.g. TMC 2457, Daiichi 1120), 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Wire Fine silver or black (1 strand (rib))
  • Thin Skin / scud back Clear or black wing slip (1 strip (shellback))
  • Sowbug dubbing (muskrat / black Antron) Dark grey to black sowbug dubbing (body, picked out)

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread behind the eye of a #16 scud hook and wrap to the bend.
  2. Tie in a length of fine wire and a strip of thin skin at the bend, leaving both hanging to the rear.
  3. Dub a fat, flattened body of dark grey/black sowbug dubbing forward to behind the eye.
  4. Pull the thin skin over the top to form a flat shellback and tie it down behind the eye.
  5. Spiral the wire forward over the shellback to segment the body and lock the back down; helicopter the wire to break it off.
  6. Pick out the dubbing along the sides and underneath to suggest legs, keeping the profile flat and wide.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
