Start black thread on a Daiichi 1760, tie in Uni-Stretch for the gills, whip finish and cut the thread away. Getting the gills out of the way first is the only clean way to build a slim chironomid head.
Slide the bead up over the gill wraps and restart the thread behind it, building the body taper immediately. The taper is what makes a chironomid look like a pupa rather than a stick.
Tie in cranberry Flashabou and bind it down the shank to the bend, leaving the tag hanging out the back for later. Running it the length of the shank keeps the underbody even.
At the bend, tie in medium silver laser tinsel and finish the taper forward with thread before you wrap anything.
Wrap the silver laser tinsel forward in touching turns for a bright chrome body, then follow with the cranberry Flashabou in open spirals as a rib. Cranberry over chrome is the LSD look. Silver reading through a red-purple overlay.
Tie off, trim, whip finish, trim the gills to a stub and coat the body with superglue or resin. The coat is what protects the tinsel and gives the fly its wet gloss.
