Lord Baltimore

Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 6-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Black hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Rib Black floss or thread (fine)
  • Body Orange floss (tapered)
  • Hackle Black hen hackle (1)
  • Wing Black duck or crow quill slips (1 pair)
  • Cheeks Jungle cock eyes (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a black fiber tail at the bend, half a shank length.
  2. Wrap a smooth, slightly tapered orange floss body to the 70% mark and rib it with 4 turns of black floss. The black-on-orange gives the Baltimore Oriole colors that name the fly.
  3. Take 2-3 turns of black hen hackle and pull it down as a beard.
  4. Set matched black quill wings low over the body.
  5. Add a jungle cock eye on each side as cheeks, then whip finish a glossy black head.
