  • Hook Wide-gap streamer hook (Gamakatsu B10S) plus 10/15/20mm articulated fish-spine shanks, 2
  • Thread White GSP 100

Materials

  • Articulated fish-spine shanks (10mm, 15mm, 20mm)
  • Woolly bugger marabou Sculpin olive (tail clump)
  • Mega semi-seal dubbing Brown dubbing (dubbing loops)
  • Articulation wire
  • Brown/black permanent marker
  • Trailing egg hook (optional, Daiichi 1520 #8)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the 10mm shank and start white GSP. Reverse-tie a small clump of sculpin-olive woolly bugger marabou, then fold it back over itself and take a couple of wraps to make a poofy tail. Color the white wraps with a marker and whip finish.
  2. Mount the 15mm shank (a hair clip on the rear shank keeps it from flipping). Start GSP, form a dubbing loop, spin in brown Mega semi-seal, brush it out, color the thread with the marker, and rough-taper it.
  3. Mount the 20mm shank and repeat: another semi-seal dubbing loop, brushed out and thread colored. Out of the vise, trim a taper into the whole body to shape the long, wiggly tail section.
  4. Mount the Gamakatsu B10S #2 hook and lay a GSP base. Tie in articulation wire between the barb and point, fold the butt over and capture it.
  5. Connect the shank assembly to the hook with a small wire loop about the size of the shank eye; double the wire back over itself (use it as belly-scratcher weighting) and bind it down, leaving a little space.
  6. Form another semi-seal dubbing loop over the hook and brush it out long so it blends into the tail and hides the articulation joint.
  7. Continue building additional semi-seal dubbing loops forward to fill out the sculpin body and head, brushing each out; trim to a broad sculpin taper and whip finish.
