Reference Recipe

  • Hook heavy salmon/steelhead hook, 2-6
  • Thread black 6/0

Materials

  • Lead wire Gray lead wire (8-10 turns (optional))
  • Marabou Black marabou (1 full clump)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl or red flash (few strands (optional))
  • Chenille Black chenille (medium, 1 length)
  • Saddle hackle Black saddle hackle (1 feather)
  • Chenille Fluorescent orange chenille (short length for head)

How to tie it

  1. Optional weight: lay 8-10 turns of lead wire over the front half of the shank, jam it back to mid-shank, and lock it with thread.
  2. Bind a full clump of black marabou at the bend for the tail, one shank length; add a few strands of pearl or red Krystal Flash if you like.
  3. Tie in a black saddle hackle by its tip and a length of black medium chenille, both at the bend.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward in touching turns to the 70% mark and tie off.
  5. Palmer the hackle forward over the body in 5-6 open, evenly spaced turns, bind at the 70% mark and snip; sweep the fibers back.
  6. Tie in fluorescent orange chenille and wrap a fat ball to just behind the eye for the egg head; bind and snip.
  7. Whip finish and cement the head.
