Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL-6XL streamer hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan or brown 3/0 (210 denier)

Materials

  • Rabbit zonker strip (tail) Natural / tan rabbit zonker strip (1 strip)
  • Foam (belly/underbody, optional) Tan fly tying foam (1 strip)
  • Deer hair (body) Natural / tan deer hair (several clumps)
  • Rubber legs (optional) Tan / barred rubber legs (2-4)
  • Foam or leather (ears, optional) Tan fly tying foam (2 small pieces)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a rabbit zonker strip at the bend as a long fleshy tail, about one shank length.
  2. If using a foam belly, bind a strip along the underside of the shank to help the fly ride hook-point-up and float.
  3. Spin and pack clumps of deer hair the length of the shank to build a dense buoyant body, packing each clump tight against the last.
  4. Add rubber legs to the sides and small ear tabs near the front as you pack if desired.
  5. Whip finish at the eye and cement the thread.
  6. Trim the spun deer hair to a rounded mouse shape (flat on the bottom, humped on top, tapering to a blunt nose) being careful not to cut the tail or legs.
