Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry-fly / hopper hook, 6-10
  • Thread Yellow 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Deer hair or moose (tail) Natural deer hair (few fibers)
  • Foam or dubbing (body) Pale yellow / cream foam or dubbing (1 strip / pinch)
  • Deer or elk hair (wing) Natural dun deer hair (clump)
  • Grizzly hackle Grizzly / ginger hackle (1-2 feathers)
  • Poly post (optional) Orange or yellow yarn (small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Run a thread base to the bend and tie in a few stiff tail fibers, splayed, about a shank-half long.
  2. Build a fat pale body forward over two-thirds of the shank with foam or heavily dubbed fur to match the big Hex mayfly.
  3. Stack and tie in a bulky deer-hair wing standing up or angled back over the body, tips at the bend.
  4. Add an upright poly post at the wing base if you want a parachute post for visibility.
  5. Wrap 2-3 turns of grizzly hackle at the wing base (around the parachute post if used, or standard collar-style if not) and tie off.
  6. Form a head, whip finish, and cement; trim any deer-hair butts square.
