Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Dry-fly dubbing (body) Pale yellow dubbing (pinch)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Light dun / natural elk or deer hair (small clump)
  • Dry-fly hackle Ginger or grizzly dry fly hackle (1 feather)
  • Hackle fibers (tail, optional) Ginger hackle fibers (few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and run a base to the bend; add a short sparse ginger tail if desired, about a shank-third long.
  2. Dub a slim pale-yellow body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Clean and stack a small clump of light elk hair, measure it to reach the bend, and tie it in over the front of the body as a downwing.
  4. Tie in a ginger or grizzly hackle and wrap 3-4 turns in front of the wing for float, then tie off.
  5. Trim the wing butts to a short head and cover with thread.
  6. Whip finish and add a tiny drop of head cement.
