Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL nymph/stonefly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Yellow / tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tungsten bead (optional) Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Goose biots (tail) Pale yellow goose biots (2)
  • Wire rib Gold wire (1 length)
  • Nymph dubbing (abdomen) Pale yellow dubbing (pinch)
  • Thin Skin or mottled turkey (wingcase) Mottled tan thin skin turkey (1 slip)
  • Ice dub or hare's ear (thorax) Amber / yellow-brown ice dub or hare s ear (pinch)
  • Rubber legs or partridge (legs) Tan / barred rubber legs or partridge (2-3 per side)

How to tie it

  1. If using a bead, seat it at the eye, then lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Split two pale-yellow biots as a short forked tail, half a shank long, and bind in the gold wire rib.
  3. Dub a slim pale-yellow abdomen forward over the back two-thirds, then counter-wrap the wire rib in 5-6 open turns and tie off.
  4. Tie in the mottled wingcase slip pointing back over the abdomen.
  5. Dub a fuller amber thorax, then fold in a couple of barred leg fibers on each side.
  6. Draw the wingcase forward over the thorax and pin it down behind the bead or eye.
  7. Whip finish and cement the wingcase tie-down.
