Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL-2XL nymph hook, 14-16
  • Thread Yellow or tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Goose biots (tail) Pale yellow / ginger goose biots (2)
  • Wire rib Gold wire (1 length)
  • Nymph dubbing (abdomen) Pale yellow / amber dubbing (pinch)
  • Thin Skin / turkey (wingcase) Mottled tan thin skin turkey (1 slip)
  • Pheasant tail or partridge (legs) Natural partridge (few fibers)
  • Peacock or dark dubbing (thorax) Amber-brown peacock or dark dubbing (pinch)
  • Epoxy or UV resin (wingcase coat) Clear scud back thin skin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and split two pale biots as a short forked tail, about half a shank long. Bind in the gold wire rib.
  2. Dub a slim pale-yellow abdomen forward over the back two-thirds, then rib with 5-6 open turns of wire and tie off.
  3. Tie in a mottled Thin Skin wingcase slip pointing back over the abdomen.
  4. Dub a fuller amber-brown thorax, then fold a few pheasant-tail leg fibers to each side.
  5. Draw the wingcase forward over the thorax and legs and pin it down behind the eye.
  6. Coat the wingcase with a thin layer of UV resin or epoxy and cure. The 'poxyback' shell is the signature of the pattern.
  7. Whip finish and cement the head.
