How to tie it
Mount a size 12 1X-long wet fly hook and lay a black thread base about halfway down the shank.
Cut about five inches of colored burlap or jute twine and untwist it. You want a single fuzzy strand, not the full string.
Tie the strand in a couple of eye lengths back from the eye, deliberately leaving room for the hackle in front, then bind it back to the bend.
Twist the strand clockwise to cord it up, then wrap it forward in touching turns, giving it another twist every couple of wraps to keep it tight, up to the waiting thread.
Lock it down with two or three good tight wraps and cut it off with your old scissors. Burlap is coarse and thick.
Choose a small hen saddle feather with plenty of web. Tie it in by the tip, fold it back over itself, and add a couple of wraps to really secure it. Snip the tip stub.
Grip the thicker part of the stem with spring-loaded hackle pliers and take three or four full turns for a big bushy collar. Tie off and trim.
Wet your fingers, sweep the hackle back, build a small head, and whip finish. Head cement is optional. Two or three turn whip finishes are plenty for a fly this simple.
