Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig or standard nymph hook, 14-16
  • Thread Tan/brown Danville 70

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead To match bead (2.8 mm)
  • Lead-free wire (0.015) Natural lead wire (a few wraps)
  • Holographic tinsel (underbody) Chartreuse angel hair (1 length)
  • D-rib / vinyl rib (body) Chartreuse/clear material (1 length)
  • Hairy ice dub (thorax) Black dubbing (small amount)
  • Starling soft hackle Natural partridge (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the slotted tungsten bead onto the hook (slot up and down), add wraps of 0.015 lead-free wire behind the bead and push them tight to the bead.
  2. Start the thread and build a slight taper and thread base over the lead for a smooth body.
  3. Tie in chartreuse holographic tinsel and the D-rib/vinyl rib (flat side up) at the bend.
  4. Wrap the tinsel forward to form the underbody, then wrap the D-rib forward in touching turns over it and tie off.
  5. Dub a small amount of black hairy ice dub behind the bead.
  6. Tie in a starling soft hackle by the tip, wrap it back over a bit of the dubbing and trim the stem, then take one or two hackle turns and secure.
  7. Add a little more black ice dub to fill between the thorax and bead, pick out the fibers, and whip finish.
