Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 14-16
  • Thread Primrose Pearsall's Gossamer or 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Light ginger cock hackle fibers (6-8)
  • Body Pale buff Australian opossum fur (small amount)
  • Wing Palest starling primary slips (2)
  • Hackle Light ginger cock (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the primrose silk behind the eye and wrap to the bend. Tie in six to eight light ginger fibers as the tail, one shank length long.
  2. Dub a slim body of pale buff opossum fur forward to the 70% mark. The pale straw body is the signature of the pale watery duns this fly copies.
  3. Cut two slips from the palest starling primaries you own, pair them, and tie them in upright and divided at the 70% mark, one shank length tall.
  4. Tie in a light ginger cock hackle behind the wings.
  5. Take 3-4 turns behind and 2 in front of the wings, tie off.
  6. Whip finish a small head and varnish.
