  • Hook Standard nymph hook, 12-20
  • Thread To match body 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead (optional) Copper or gold slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-5 fibers)
  • Micro tubing (abdomen) Chartreuse or olive micro tubing (1 length)
  • Ice dub (thorax) To match dubbing (tiny pinch)
  • McFlylon or Antron (legs) White poly yarn (small tuft)
  • Pearl tinsel (wingcase) Pearl flashabou (1 slip)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the bead if using and start thread behind it. Keep everything slim. This fly wins on being sparse.
  2. Tie in 4-5 pheasant tail fibers as a short tail, no longer than half a shank.
  3. Bind in a strand of micro tubing and wrap it forward under tension, stretched tight so the abdomen stays skinny and segmented, stopping at the 65% mark.
  4. Tie in a slip of pearl tinsel for the wingcase pointing back over the abdomen.
  5. Dub a small sparse ice-dub thorax, then draw the pearl tinsel wingcase forward over it and tie down behind the bead.
  6. Split a short tuft of white McFlylon to the sides as legs, keeping them stubby.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a tiny drop of cement.
