Materials

  • Golden pheasant crest (tail) Yellow-orange golden pheasant crest (1 short piece)
  • Red floss or wool (throat/butt) Red floss (small tuft)
  • Cream/white bucktail (underwing) White bucktail (small clump)
  • Orange bucktail (mid wing) Orange bucktail (small clump)
  • Green bucktail over dark (wing) Green then dark/olive (small clump each)
  • Grizzly hackle (cheeks, optional) Grizzly hackle (2)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at mid-shank and run a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short golden-pheasant-crest or hackle-fiber tail, no more than a shank-third long.
  3. Add a small red throat tuft at the tail to suggest the brookie's belly, then wind a slim body of tinsel or floss forward to the head.
  4. Build the wing in stacked layers to mimic a brook trout's coloring: white bucktail first, then orange, then a green over-wing, and finally a thin topping of dark olive or peacock. Keep each clump sparse and the same length, reaching the tail.
  5. Add short grizzly hackle-tip cheeks flat against each side if desired.
  6. Form a neat tapered head, whip finish, and coat the head with cement or lacquer.
